SOFIA JERNBERG

TITEL: "One Pitch: Birds for Distortion and Mouth Synthesizers" (2015)

The focus here is to emphasize the sound possibilities of the human voice. Text or anything that can be perceived  as language has been erased in the creating process. With no electronic effects, simply voice through a microphone, achieve a multilayered structure.

SOFIA JERNBERG is a Swedish experimental singer, composer, improviser and performer, born in Ethiopia 1983. She grew up in Ethiopia, Vietnam and Sweden. Since 2011 she is based in Oslo, Norway.

One of her deepest interests as a singer is to explore the “instrumental” possibilities of the voice. Her singing vocabulary include sounds and techniques that often contradict a conventional singing style. She has dug deep into non verbal vocalizing, split tone singing, pitchless singing and distorted singing.

She has performed several staged music theater pieces like Arnold Schönberg’s ”Pierrot Lunaire”, Salvatore Sciarrinos "Lohengrin”. Composers have written roles especially with her in mind like in Emily Hall’s ”Folie à Deux and Anna Thorvaldsdottir’s ”UR:”. She has performed together with visual artist Camille Norment and was a part of her piece ”Rapture” (Venice Biennale 2015) and ”Lull” (Festspillene i Bergen 2016).  She is featured in an 80 minutes cinematic work, ”Union of the North”, by Erna Ómarsdóttir, Matthew Barney and Valdimar Jóhannsson.  As a composer, her main focus lies in blending improvisation and composition. Besides composing for her own ensembles, she regularly gets commissions from others. Previous commissions: Barents composer orchestra, Swedish Radio P2, Stockholm Jazz Festival, Trondheim jazz orchestra, vocal ensemble Oslo 14, Klang - Copenhagen Avantgarde Music Festival, The Gothenburg Combo and various chamber ensembles."

KIM MYHR

In March 2014, guitarist Kim Myhr released the critically acclaimed solo record «All Your Limbs Singing» (SOFA); an orchestral exploration of the 12-string guitar sounding like something in between American folk strumming and 60s avant-garde soundmass orchestral music. He released a second album called «Bloom» in 2016 , where his music took a new and more electronic direction. Autumn 2017 sees a third solo album «You | me» to be released on HUBRO.

In recent years, Kim Myhr has been one of the leading voices on the experimental scene in Norway as both a composer and a guitarist.  Myhr writes for chamber ensembles, electroacoustic settings and various theatrical projects. Last year he released «In The End His Voice Will Be The Sound Of Paper» - a collaborative album released together with Trondheim Jazz Orchestra and Jenny Hval, which was described by the Quietus as «an arresting piece of work», and by Slug Magazine as «a grotesquely beautiful paradox of sound, pleasing to the last». Myhr is a member of MURAL (Ingar Zach, Jim Denley) and Circadia (David Stackenäs, Joe Williamson, Tony Buck), and has done collaborations with Sidsel Endresen, Quatuour Bozzini, Sebastian Roux and Lasse Marhaug to mention just a few. He is co-running the experimental label SOFA.

MAGNUS GRANBERG

”Granberg´s achievement is immense. Drawing on this 17th-century source, aucourant art cutsacross allegiances of style while the spectre of John Dowland is never too far from the surface”.

Philip Clark, The Gramophone

”Granberg’s stated aim is to create a music and performance practice which draws no clear distinction between composition and improvisation” … ”But in contrast with the spontaneity and excitement of improvisation, there’s a sense of inevitability and organic unity that belongs to the most compelling composition. It creates a singular atmosphere of drama and mystery, with an ethos that’s totally involving.”

Andy Hamilton, The Wire
