Ceramic art carries a story about the origins of humanity. Clay vessels were one of our first cultural expressions, and it is by studying their design that we trace the development and migration of prehistoric peoples. It was also in clay that human written language began, and thereby what we call history. Eva-Marie Kothe's simple, unglazed vessels are a living memory of this ancient tradition, and her creations become the starting point for a concert with elements of electronics, dance, voice and light.
Ceramic materials have a unique acoustic profile, both natural and artificial. They clearly demonstrate the connection between physical matter and the immateriality of sensory impressions: fired or raw, filled or empty, closed or open – each configuration has its own characteristic sound palette. Around Kothe's vessels gather musicians Anna Gustavsson, Casey Moir and Gusten Aldenklint, dancer Helena Franzén and light designer Anna Wemmert. Electronics interact with clay, bodies interact with light in a multisensory overlay of present and past.
The day after the concert, August 31, we invite you to a workshop led by Eva-Marie Kothe, Anna Gustavsson and the ceramist and blacksmith Jessica Fleetwood, where you, inspired by the concert, will have the chance to make instruments out of clay. These will then be dried and fired, and during the village festival in Dals Långed on September 20, they will be put into use: first in the form of a musical workshop led by Anna Gustavson, which will then result in a public concert in the afternoon.
